In brief: Mexico sets date to unveil US tariff response

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has said that her government will respond on 9 March to the recent decision announced by US President Donald Trump to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports. She called on Mexicans to gather in the main square, or Zócalo, in Mexico City (CDMX) at noon on 9 March where she would outline “tariff and non-tariff-related actions” in response to the US’ “unilateral decision”. She said that the aim “isn’t to initiate an economic confrontation” adding that “it’s inconceivable not to think of the damage this will cause to the economies and people of both countries.” Yesterday, in an interview with Fox Business Network, a financial news channel owned by US conservative media company Fox News, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that Trump will “probably” announce a deal which would meet Mexico and Canada “in the middle” with a focus on the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In the interview Lutnick said “both the Canadians and Mexicans were on the phone with me all day today trying to show that they’ll do better… so I think [Trump] is going to work something out with them.
