Air pollution causes alarm

Citizens of the Valle de México, which comprises Mexico City (CDMX) and surrounding areas in Estado de México (Edomex), woke up on New Year’s Day to alerts of extremely poor air quality. The Comisión Ambiental de la Megalópolis (CAMe), a government body charged with environmental protection in the CDMX metropolitan area, warned that levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a major driver of air pollution, were too high. CAMe advised residents to stay indoors and use a face mask if they did need to venture outside. Although the alerts were lifted later that day, the incident was indicative of a continuing issue facing the CDMX metropolitan region and central Mexico more widely.
