In brief: Bolivia’s first steel plant inaugurated

*Bolivia’s President Luis Arce has inaugurated the Mutún steel plant – the country’s first steel production facility, located in Puerto Suárez municipality in the eastern department of Santa Cruz. “Bolivia has entered the era of steel production in the 200th year of our independence,” Arce wrote on social media, adding that the Mutún facility was a result of his government’s efforts to diversify the economy. The facility, run by the state steel company Empresa Siderúrgica del Mutún (ESM), was built with a B$3.8bn (US$546m) investment from the Bolivian government and the Chinese state-owned steel company Sinosteel. According to an ESM press release, the site will produce 200,000 tonnes of corrugated steel bars and rods per year, reducing Bolivia’s steel imports by nearly 50% and generating 700 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect jobs.
