Mexico: In line with an Executive Order (EO) issued by US President
Donald Trump upon taking office on 20 January, on 20 February the US State Department officially designated eight organisations as Foreign Terrorist Organisations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs). These include six Mexican organisations: Cártel de Sinaloa, Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), Cártel del Noreste, La Nueva Familia Michoacana, Cártel de Golfo (CDG), and Cárteles Unidos. The other two organisations designated are: Tren de Aragua, a transnational organisation that originated in Venezuela with cells in Colombia, Peru, and Chile, and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), a transnational organisation that originated in Los Angeles but shifted to Central America as individuals were deported there from the US. According to the US State Department, the designations mean that “
all property and interests in property of those designated that are in the US or that are in possession or control of a US person are blocked, and US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them”. It adds that “
designations can assist law enforcement actions of other US agencies and governments”.
