Since November, Brazil’s attorney general Paulo Gonet has had a police report on file which recommended pressing criminal charges against former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) for alleged involvement in a plot to launch a miliary coup in 2022 [WR-24-47]. On 18 February Gonet completed the review of the police findings and formally accused Bolsonaro of the charges recommended in the report. Bolsonaro is hoping to make a comeback in the 2026 presidential election, and pollsters have suggested that he could be a strong contender if he were allowed to run, but these charges could dampen his political ambitions and increase the urgency for Brazil’s conservatives to unite behind a new candidate ahead of next year’s presidential race.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1823 words.
