*Cuba’s labour minister, Marta Elena Feito Cabrera, has announced the suspension of work activities and classes for two days (14 and 15 February) citing the country’s “energy situation”. The island continues to face major power outages due to the crumbling state of its national electricity system and shortage of fuel for generators, among other factors. Yesterday the Cuban state power company, Unión Eléctrica (UNE), said it expected a 1,740 megawatt (MW) deficit that day, predicting a maximum availability of 1,460 MW and a maximum demand of 3,200 MW although it said the deficit could rise to 1,810 MW.
