If Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro had hoped that his 4 February decision to broadcast a cabinet meeting live would reassure the public that his government was diligently striving to tackle the problems of the day, he was sorely mistaken. Over nearly six hours, ministers fired accusations and recriminations across the cabinet table, while Petro confirmed his reputation as an aloof and abrasive leader. Such was the rancour that the interior minister, Juan Fernando Cristo, proposed following the meeting that the entire cabinet should resign to give Petro a fresh start with a new team.
