In brief: Brazil’s vehicle sales up year-on-year, down in monthly terms

*Brazil’s national federation of automobile dealers (Fenabrave) has released its figures for vehicle sales in January, putting monthly sales at 341,435 units. This marks a 20.3% decrease from December 2024, but a 5.87% increase from January 2024. The vehicle category that registered the highest monthly sales decrease was passenger cars, with 123,377 units sold in January, down 35.0% compared to December. The category with the greatest year-on-year increase was buses, registering 2,191 units sold in January, up 41.7% from the same month in 2024. The only vehicle category to see an increase in both monthly and yearly terms was motorcycles, with 151,952 units sold in January, up 0.02% from December and up 6.0% from January 2024. Regarding the automotive sector’s clean energy transition, Fenabrave reported that monthly sales of hybrid cars and light commercial vehicles totalled 12,802 units, down 25.8% in monthly terms but up 67.0% compared to January last year. However, sales for electric cars and light commercial vehicles only came to 3,700 units in January, down 15.3% in monthly terms and down 15.0% year-on-year.
