In brief: Unemployment dips in Mexico

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures showing that the unemployment rate of the economically active population – those aged 15 or over who are either employed or seeking employment – was 2.4% in Mexico in December, down from 2.6% in both November 2024 and December 2023. In December, some 31.8m workers were employed in the informal sector, putting the country’s informality rate at 53.7%. Meanwhile, 4.1m individuals reported being underemployed, meaning they expressed the need and availability to work additional hours. This group represented 6.9% of the employed population. Employment by sector showed that 26.7m employed people (45%) worked in the services sector, while 11.5m (19.5%) were employed in retail, 9.7m (16.4%) in the manufacturing industry, and 5.9m (9.9%) in agriculture.
