In brief: Mexico’s gov’t unveils investment in roads

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has presented a national road infrastructure programme with an investment of M$35bn this year (US$1.68bn). Sheinbaum stated the programme aimed to connect communities and address the most vulnerable areas of the country. The transport minister, Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, explained that the M$35bn includes resources from the national infrastructure fund (Fonadin) for work on 263km of roads, also including the construction of bridges. Throughout the entire administration, he said investment as part of the plan would be around M$150bn. The works to be started this year include roads in Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Chihuahua, Estado de México (Edomex), Oaxaca, Tabasco, and Campeche states. Sheinbaum noted that the decision of which projects to prioritise first had been made following meetings with state governors, adding that the government was investing a lot in Guerrero state in particular “due to the needs that Guerrero has in terms of jobs, connectivity and the development of the state”.  The government has also announced an investment of nearly M$8bn, starting with an initial fund of M$800m this year to promote minor and major maintenance actions overseen by the national fund for the promotion of tourism (Fonatur) with the aim of generating investment in the resort town of Acapulco in Guerrero. Acapulco has been struggling to recover from the dual impact of Hurricane Otis in October 2023 and Hurricane John in October last year.
