BOLIVIA: Morales skips court date as supporters rally

One of the key questions in the ongoing human trafficking case of Bolivia’s former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) has been whether the police are willing to act on the arrest warrant issued by prosecutors in mid-December [WR-24-50]. The authorities will come under fresh pressure to move against Morales after he missed a 14 January court appearance, which he said he was too unwell to attend. With general elections fast approaching this August, the opposition is attempting to capitalise on the soaring tensions between Morales and President Luis Arce, which have torn the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) in two.
