In brief: AWS launches Mexico infrastructure region

*Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a US$5bn investment in Mexico, marked by the launch of its first cluster of data centres in the central state of Querétaro and a programme to empower small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and communities. According to AWS, the Querétaro data region, first announced in February 2024, is projected to create 7,000 full-time jobs annually and set to contribute US$10bn to Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP). AWS also announced the InCommunities Fund, which allocates US$300,000 to help local groups, schools, and organisations initiate new community projects in Querétaro.  In a statement on social media, Querétaro’s governor, Mauricio Kuri, stated that AWS had chosen his state “thanks to the talent of our people, the ability to innovate and the willingness to collaborate with the best in the world”. The investment aligns with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s ‘Plan México,’ an economic plan presented on 13 January which aims to attract M$277bn (US$13.4bn) in foreign and local investments and capitalise on nearshoring opportunities. AWS has also committed to training 200,000 more Mexicans in digital skills and generative artificial intelligence foundations by 2026.
