*The governor of Venezuela’s western border state of Táchira, Freddy Bernal, has announced that the border with Colombia has been fully reopened after being closed from 10-13 January as part of security measures related to the 10 January inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro for a third term in office. Bernal, a Maduro ally, had previously said on 10 January that the border closure was due to “information about an international conspiracy”. Yesterday, Bernal noted remarks by Colombia’s former president Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010), who on 11 January called for “an international intervention in Venezuela, preferably supported by the United Nations, to dislodge the tyrants from power and convene immediate free elections”. Venezuela’s border with Brazil, which was also closed on 10 January, was reportedly also reopened yesterday.
