On 31 December Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum published by decree a reform to expand the list of crimes for which pretrial detention is mandatory. Among the crimes now carrying mandatory pretrial detention orders are those pertaining to the production and trafficking of the synthetic opioid fentanyl, which is driving overdose deaths in the US, and extortion, which has become an increasing issue for Mexico’s business community.
