Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino celebrated the 25
th anniversary on 31 December of the full transfer of sovereignty over the Panama Canal from the US to Panama. Mulino lavished praise on the architect of the treaties enabling the transfer, former president Jimmy Carter (1977-1981), who died two days earlier at the age of 100. Four days before that the incoming US president, Donald Trump, slammed Carter’s decision to hand over control of the Canal, accusing Panama of ceding sovereignty to China and overcharging US ships to use the waterway.
