MEXICO: Escalating violence in Tabasco

A group of armed men stormed La Casita Azul, a bar in the Tamulté de las Barrancas neighbourhood of Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco state, on 4 January and opened fire. The attack, which left seven dead and five injured, came just over a month after another massacre in a bar in the state capital. The attacks reflect a surge in violence that has taken place in Tabasco over the past year, amid reports that criminal groups, including the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), a major Mexican drug trafficking organisation (DTO), are fighting for control of the state’s strategic migrant and drug smuggling corridors.
