*Itaipú Binacional, the energy company co-owned by the Brazilian and Paraguayan governments, has announced that the Itaipú hydroelectric dam generated 67.1m megawatt hours (MWh) in 2024. This marks a 20% decrease from the 83.9m MWh produced in 2023, although the dam operator highlighted that 2023 had the highest annual production figure in the past six years. In a press release, the company attributed the annual drop to intense droughts last year which impacted various regions spanning Brazil and Paraguay, such as the Pantanal wetlands and the Amazon rainforest. Electricity from the Itaipú dam accounted for 6% of Brazil’s total power consumption in 2024, while it accounted for 80% of Paraguay’s consumption.
