GUATEMALA | US approves imports of Guatemalan avocados. On 7 November the US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (Aphis) authorised the importation of fresh Hass avocados from Guatemala into the US as of 8 November. The decision has been hailed by the Guatemalan government led by President Bernardo Arévalo as a “significant advance for the Guatemalan agriculture sector”. Guatemala’s exporters’ association (Agexport) said that in the first year it was projecting that around 3,000 tonnes (t) of avocados could be exported to the US, rising to more than 15,000 t by 2030. According to June figures from Agexport, Guatemala exported US$16m worth of avocados in total in 2023, up 33% on 2022.
