MEXICO: Polanco murder causes stir

An execution took place in broad daylight in Polanco, one of the most upmarket areas of Mexico City (CDMX), on 6 December, sending shockwaves through the capital. The victim was a music promoter, Jesús Pérez Alvear, who allegedly had ties to the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), a major Mexican drug trafficking organisation (DTO). The murder is a reminder of organised crime’s increasing overlap with legal business models and its penetration into all areas of Mexico.
