In brief: Warnings over heavy rainfall in southern Brazil

*At least 24 municipalities in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina have declared emergencies in response to heavy rainfall which began on 6 December and is forecast to continue today (9 December). According to local press reports, entire neighbourhoods have flooded in Joinville, the largest city in Santa Catarina, forcing 1,300 people to flee their homes, while 200 families have reportedly been evacuated from the municipality of Bom Retiro. On 6 December Brazil’s ministry for integration and regional development announced a red alert due to heavy rains in the south of the country, while the health ministry has said that it is monitoring the health risk posed by contaminated water in the area. The neighbouring state of Rio Grande do Sul was previously devastated by floods that began in late April, causing estimated economic damage of R$110bn-R$176bn (US$17.9bn-US$28.7bn).
