*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated she is “convinced” that Mexico can reach a deal with the US to avoid the implementation of trade tariffs. Sheinbaum was speaking in a press conference following a week of speculation around the future of US-Mexico commercial relations due to threats from US President-elect Donald Trump to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico, as well as from Canada. Sheinbaum stated that Mexico had a plan in the case that tariffs were implemented, but “the aim is that this does not happen”. Sheinbaum spoke to Trump on the phone on 27 November following the tariff threats, whereas Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau travelled to Florida to meet with Trump on 29 November.
