MEXICO: Mayors under fire

Mexico’s municipal mayors are coming under attack. Candidates competing at the municipal level were the most vulnerable to violence in this year’s electoral process, which saw citizens elect over 20,000 positions at federal, state, and municipal levels. The violence that plagued this process has continued long after election day, with current, former, and future mayors (mayor-elects) all targeted. On 12 November authorities in Guerrero state announced an arrest in relation to arguably the most shocking of these murders, that of Chilpancingo mayor Alejandro Arcos Catalán.
