Trump spells challenging period for Mexico-US security relations
The election of Donald Trump to another term as US president will have a major impact on the US-Mexico security relationship. Tackling illegal migration and drug trafficking from Mexico will be priority security issues for Trump, whose rhetoric on both has hardened since his first term in office (2017-2021). With more seats in congress this time around, Trump will also have more power to enact hard-line security legislation that impacts Mexico. Dealing with the new Trump administration on these issues is set to be one of the most serious challenges facing President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government.
