Haitian security forces take fight to Chérizier

Haiti’s most powerful gang leader and self-styled warlord, Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Chérizier, felt the heat this week. Chérizier, the leader of the Viv Ansanm united front of gangs and arguably the most powerful man in Haiti, had seemed untouchable until a joint operation launched by the national police (PNd’H) and the multinational security support (MSS) mission in his stronghold in Port-au-Prince. Chérizier evaded capture but the security forces insisted the operation had served notice of its intent to break the gang leader’s stranglehold on the capital.
