When Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as Mexico’s first-ever female president in June, it prompted hopes of a new era in which promoting women’s rights and addressing gender violence would take priority in Mexico’s political space. At her inauguration in October, Sheinbaum declared that it was “the time for women”. She has since made moves to eliminate the gender pay gap, improve pension support for women, and enshrine the right of women to a life free from violence in the constitution.
