*Nicaragua’s 92-member unicameral legislature, which is controlled by President Daniel Ortega’s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), has voted unanimously to approve the government’s 2025 budget proposal. According to a statement from the national legislature, 52.8% of the budget is allocated to social spending, with a focus on health and education, citizen security, road construction, housing, sports infrastructure, electricity, potable water, and transportation and energy subsidies. According to state mouthpiece el19digital, the spending side of the 2025 budget is C$154bn (US$4.18bn), while the revenue side of the budget totals C$158.7bn, both up on the budget approved for 2024. This leaves a budget surplus of C$4.7bn.
