Cuba’s economy & planning minister, Joaquín Alonso Vázquez, says there will be “no economic growth this year”. Such comments are hardly a surprise given the continued devastation facing the island. Following a major power failure which paralysed Cuba last month amid the onslaught of Hurricane Oscar [
WR-24-42], leaving some 10m people without electricity, there was again a nationwide blackout following the passage of another hurricane, Tropical Storm Rafael, while two earthquakes struck eastern Cuba on 10 November, causing significant damage. This continues to produce some signs of unrest, although for now it remains a far cry from the unprecedented July 2021 protests over health, economic, and political grievances, which produced a brutal crackdown by the government.
