Argentina stops buying Bolivian gas
In late September, Bolivia’s state hydrocarbons company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) announced that the country had ceased to export natural gas to Argentina, ending an arrangement that began in the 1970s and had been strengthened by a contract initially signed in 2006 for a period of twenty years. The latest revision to this contract, signed in 2022, had stipulated that the contract would end in July this year, but this was extended for a short period in order to boost supply during the southern hemisphere winter. In the end, demand did not rise as sharply as anticipated due to unusually mild temperatures for the time of year. As a result, Argentina’s state-owned energy company Energía Argentina (Enarsa) declared that it no longer required Bolivian gas imports, and the Argentine gas regulator Enargas confirmed that the last import of gas was received from Bolivia on 17 September.
