The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) this week declared the proclamation of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro as the victor in July’s presidential elections as “illegitimate” and urged the international community to make a concerted and coordinated effort to advance a “democratic transition” in the country. Beyond the recent refusal of the Brazilian and Colombian governments to recognise the legitimacy of the victory of Maduro over his opposition rival Edmundo González without the publication of voter tally sheets, there has been no ‘concerted’ let alone ‘coordinated’ effort to push for a democratic transition in Venezuela, although the recent victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential elections could change that after he announced that hardline Maduro critic Senator Marco Rubio would become his secretary of state in January.
