*The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (Aphis) has authorised the importation of fresh Hass avocados from Guatemala into the US, as of today (8 November). According to an Aphis press release, “through careful analysis and thorough research, Aphis has determined that this commodity can be safely imported from Guatemala into the US with appropriate mitigations”. The decision has been hailed by the Guatemalan government led by President Bernardo Arévalo as a “significant advance for the Guatemalan agriculture sector” as well as Guatemala’s exporters’ association (Agexport) which said that in the first year, it was projecting that around 3,000 tonnes (t) of avocados could be exported to the US, rising to more than 15,000 t by 2030. According to June figures from Agexport, Guatemala exported US$16m worth of avocados in total in 2023, up 33% on 2022.
