NICARAGUA: New telecoms law draws alarm

“A direct attack on freedom of expression in our country”. This was the response by local journalists’ network Periodistas y Comunicadores Independientes de Nicaragua (PCIN) to a new law approved by Nicaragua’s 92-member unicameral legislature, which like all state institutions is controlled by President Daniel Ortega’s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN). While the authoritarian government maintains the new legislation is necessary to update a regulatory framework dating back to 1995, its critics warn that it will provide it with additional tools to further intensify the brutal crackdown on dissent that has been ongoing since 2018.
