A Honduran judge has acquitted five human rights defenders (HDRs) and environmentalists, including Juan López, who was murdered on 14 September sparking international outrage [WR-24-37]. The five - Carlos Leonel George, Reynaldo Domínguez, José Adaly Cedillo, Marco Tulio Ramos, and López - were accused of charges including the illegal deprivation of liberty and aggravated damages which were widely deemed to be trumped up. The judge’s ruling has been well-received by civil-society groups such as leading indigenous and environmental activist group Consejo de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas (COPINH). It comes amid signs of progress with regard to the investigation into López’s killing, which has piled significant pressure on the leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by President Xiomara Castro and authorities to act.End of preview - This article contains approximately 679 words.
