In brief: Panama schools closed due to rains

*Panama’s education ministry has suspended classes today (6 November) across the country. This follows a warning by the institute of meteorology and hydrology (IMHPA) and is based on a red alert issued by Panama’s emergency operations committee (COE) in response to heavy rains which hit Panama on 3 November causing floods, landslides, the overflow of some rivers, and severe weather-related incidents. According to a 5 November update by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (Echo), the most affected provinces are Los Santos, Herrera, Veraguas, Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, and Ngöbé Bugle. The Echo also cites media which suggests at least four people died, one in Veraguas, two in Ngöbé Bugle and another in Herrera. It adds that “two others are still missing and more than 200 families have been affected most of them in Los Santos and Herrera provinces”.
