Words are important, and Rosanety Barrios, who worked for over a decade at the Mexican energy regulatory commission (Comisión Reguladora de Energía – CRE), told Associated Press news agency in early October that she had noticed a change. In her first speeches in office the new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, was using the terms “sustainability” and “renewable energy” a lot. Her predecessor AMLO, in contrast, hardly ever used those words at all. In short, Sheinbaum is an enthusiast for clean energy; AMLO was much more of a fossil-fuel advocate kind of guy, an exponent of old-fashioned oil and gas-based energy nationalism.
