In one of his final acts as president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) promulgated into law a controversial constitutional reform initiative to place the national guard (GN) under military command. The reform, which received the support of his successor, President Claudia Sheinbaum, in her inauguration speech on 1 October, will consolidate the militarisation of the GN, which was originally conceived as a civilian policing force.
