​COLOMBIA: Military campaign advances in the south-west

The Colombian military recaptured the small town of El Plateado on 12 October, ending a six-year period in which the town, in Argelia municipality, Cauca department, was not under the control of the state. Cabinet ministers arrived in El Plateado with much fanfare after it was recovered from the Estado Mayor Central (EMC) guerrilla alliance and said that the town will be used as a bridgehead to boost security and investment in the wider Micay valley – Cauca’s epicentre of coca production.
