HONDURAS: Rodrí­guez Maradiaga; a major force within the Church

As we go to press the 117 cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church will enter a conclave in the Sistine Chapel to decide who will succeed Pope John Paul II. It is impossible to say who will appear on the balcony of the Vatican just after the dean of the cardinals shouts "Habemus papam!" to the waiting crowd in St Peter's square but one name that keeps cropping up in lists of possible successors is that of the cardinal archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Oscar Andrés Rodrí­guez Maradiaga. Whatever the outcome he has cemented his position as one of the pre-eminent figures in the Church.
