EL SALVADOR: Flores pulls out of OAS race

Francisco Flores, the former president of El Salvador, pulled out of the race for the position of secretary-general of the Organization of American States (OAS) on 8 April. In the end he was too divisive a figure. Even fellow Central American leaders, who had argued that the subregion deserved the top job because it had been in the hands (briefly) of Costa Rica's former president Miguel Angel Rodrí­guez, until he was compelled to stand down on corruption charges, were split over his candidacy.
