ST KITTS & NEVIS: Stopping sugar cane production

After 300 years of production, from 2006 St Kitts and Nevis will no longer have a sugar cane industry. Speaking in mid March, Dr Denzil Douglas, the prime minister, said that the twin island federation would end production after this year's harvest, due to declining production and higher costs. The harvest began last month and agriculture officials said an estimated 12,360 tonnes of sugar would be produced from 155,721 tonnes of cane.
