MEXICO: Spotlight on political violence
Authorities in Oaxaca state confirmed the murder of Román Ruiz Bohórquez, the mayor of Candelaria Loxicha municipality, on 15 October. Ruiz’s killing comes just nine days after the brutal murder of the mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of neighbouring Guerrero state, on 6 October [WR-24-40]. The killings, while apparently very different in nature, have shed light on the dangers facing local politicians in Mexico, indicating that the political violence that plagued this year’s electoral period is set to continue.
