CHILE: Boric targets student debt

It is no exaggeration to say that Chile’s student loan system was the making of President Gabriel Boric. Boric was at the forefront of the large-scale 2011-2012 student protests calling for it to be scrapped, shaping his political career and putting him on course to take advantage of the Estallido Social civil unrest in 2019-2020, which helped propel him to power in 2022. With only 17 months of his four-year term remaining, Boric finally returned to his roots by tabling an initiative to overhaul the student loan system, one of his flagship campaign proposals.
