*Mexico’s newly sworn-in President Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged to boost renewable energy production to make up 45% of the country’s electricity generation by 2030. Sheinbaum made the promise as part of 100 commitments for her time in office, which she outlined before crowds in the main square of Mexico City (CDMX) following her inauguration yesterday (1 October). Sheinbaum said her government would also promote a programme for those living in the north of the country to install solar panels on their homes, as well as consolidating Plan Sonora, a sustainable energy plan focusing on the northern state of Sonora, by expanding solar power generation and the lithium, copper, semiconductor, and electromobility production chain. However, President Sheinbaum also pledged continued support for the state-run electricity (CFE) and oil (Pemex) companies, which currently rely on fossil fuels for energy production.
