In brief: Panama and China sign maritime deal

*Panama’s maritime authority (AMP) and China’s Shenzhen port authority (CNSNZ), one of the world’s busiest ports, have signed a maritime cooperation agreement. According to an AMP press release, the agreement aims to boost sustainable maritime development in both countries through collaboration in various areas. AMP administrator, Alexander De Gracia, said that the agreement seeks to “highlight important aspects such as planning, construction, operation, and management of port facilities, environmental protection, information technology, training, safety, as well as navigation aids and hydrographic and cartographic services, among other initiatives”. The two countries established bilateral ties in 2017 after Panama severed relations with Taiwan.
