Mexico’s El Menchito convicted in US

Mexico: On 20 September a US federal jury convicted Rubén ‘El Menchito’ Oseguera González, the son of Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of Mexico’s Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) drug trafficking organisation (DTO), for his involvement in drug trafficking activities. A US Department of Justice (DoJ) statement says that according to court documents and evidence presented at the trial, which lasted two weeks, between 2007 and 2017, Oseguera González “led an international drug trafficking organisation (CJNG) responsible for importing large quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine from Mexico into the US”. It describes him as “second-in-command of CJNG”.  Oseguera González was extradited to the US in 2020. The DoJ statement cites US Attorney General Merrick Garland as stating that “El Menchito now joins the growing list of high-ranking cartel leaders that the Justice Department has convicted in an American courtroom.” Additionally, Garland thanked “our Mexican law enforcement partners for their extensive cooperation and sacrifice in holding accountable leaders of the Jalisco Cartel.” Oseguera González is scheduled for a hearing on 10 January 2025 when he faces a minimum sentence of 40 years.
