HAITI: Edging towards elections

Haiti’s Prime Minister Garry Conille has sought to provide reassurance that the country’s long overdue elections will take place next year. His comments came days after the establishment of a provisional electoral council (CEP) by the transitional presidential council (TPC), which was set up in April in response to the unprecedented crisis in Haiti, where coordinated gang attacks in late February ejected former prime minister Ariel Henry (2021-2024). Conille’s assurances and the CEP’s creation indicate that the interim government is intent on organising elections, which last took place in 2016, so that a new president and legislature can take office by February 2026. However, doubts persist regarding the government’s other key objective which is necessary for elections to be held – restoring a semblance of security to the country, large swathes of which remain under the control of gangs.
