*US multinational technology company Microsoft has announced it will invest US$1.3bn in Mexico over the next three years to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and initiatives focused on promoting digital and AI skills, with the aim of democratising access to AI skills for some 5m Mexicans. Speaking during a keynote speech at an event in Mexico City, Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella also stated that the investment would work on improving connectivity and encouraging AI adoption by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to accelerate their digital transformation and business operations within the country, reaching some 30,000 SMEs. Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s incoming economy minister, celebrated the news on social media, noting that Microsoft had been working in Mexico for 38 years. Microsoft highlighted companies and education institutions including food company Grupo Bimbo, private university Tec de Monterrey, and building materials company Cemex as successful examples of AI adoption in Mexico.
