US hails Caricom deployment to Haiti

Haiti: On 15 September the US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols said that the US welcomes the “deployment of the advance Caricom [Caribbean Community] contingent that includes Jamaica and Belize” to the multinational security support (MSS) mission in Haiti. Writing on social media he said that “Jamaica and Belize now join Kenya in a multinational effort to support the Haitian people as they secure their country from the terror of armed gangs”. On 12 September, 24 Jamaican security personnel (20 military and four police officials) and two Belizean military officers arrived in Haiti to participate in the MSS which was green-lit by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in October 2023.They join 400 Kenyan police officers who began arriving in the country in late June as part of the mission. The deployment came ten days after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken paid a visit to Haiti – the first visit to Haiti by a US secretary of state in nine years.
