With barely two weeks until he leaves office, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador promulgated the most contentious reform of his six-year term on 15 September, which marked Mexico’s Grito de Independencia. López Obrador celebrated the passage of the judicial reform as a defining principle and legacy of his ‘fourth transformation’ government. Provisions such as the direct election of judges have caused widespread controversy, however, fuelling tensions with the supreme court (SCJN), the business community, the political opposition, and, notably, the US embassy.
