*New studies financed by the Central American Development Bank (BCIE) and South Korea, via the South Korea-BCIE partnership single donor trust fund (KTF), have identified Costa Rica’s La Cruz canton, in the northern province of Guanacaste, as having the best potential for offshore wind power. Carried out with the involvement of Costa Rica’s state-run electricity and telecommunications provider Grupo Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), the studies found “favourable wind conditions” to develop an offshore wind park as well as “wide interest” on the part of the local community for the initiative. According to a BCIE statement, the studies highlight the need for “exhaustive analysis of marine-coastal infrastructure” and the promotion of “strategic alliances with key actors such as the BCIE with capacity to finance the initiative” as a further step in developing such a project.
