Judicial reform clears final hurdle in Mexico

Tensions are running high as President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s highly controversial judicial reform initiative won congressional approval this week. The senate announced it had approved the reform just after midnight on 11 September, following an explosive legislative session. While the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) is going to all lengths to ensure the reform succeeds, it is drawing increasing criticism from the political opposition, private sector, and the US, as well as facing mounting opposition in the form of widespread protests, strike action, and legal challenges.
